Democratic National Convention Protest - Day 1
I went down to the DNC today and participated in the protest. I watched it form and watched it fall apart. These are some of my favorite personal photos. Video will be uploaded later.

This girl goes to my school and asked me to take a photo of her giving a flower to the cops. They told her to "back up" and basically didn't respond other than shaking their head "no."

These sly bastards suddenly popped out of this building during the protest. You can be pretty sure they got arrested.

P.S. - Watch this video for a great laugh.

thanks for posting the pics. I don't understand the viewpoint of recreating 68 though. Seems like you'd want to avoid all that nastiness, no?

I sat in a couple of the Recreate 68 meetings in the weeks preceding, and, while I agree it is an unfortunate name given the negative associations it calls up, they had some interesting and compelling things to say about the choice.

They said:
(1) It is not about recreating the riots in Chicago, but about resurrecting the revolutionary spirit of '68 which was, it seemed, sweeping the globe.

(2) Insofar as their is a tie in to the unfortunate events in Chicago, official inquiry into the events determined that it was a "police riot".

"the Walker Report to the National Commission on the Causes and Prevention of Violence assigned blame for the mayhem in the streets to the police force, calling the violence a 'police riot.'" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1968_Democratic_National_Convention_protests )

So, the tragedy in '68 was, by and large, a result of police brutalizing citizens exercising their first amendment rights. The idea, I think, is that we should recover that revolutionary spirit without letting the violence of the police 48 years ago scare off.

I'm kinda annoyed at the girl trying to give a flower to the cops.

"This girl goes to my school and asked me to take a photo of her giving a flower to the cops. They told her to 'back up' and basically didn't respond other than shaking their head 'no.'"

That is a cheap shot in my book.

These are guys doing there job, trying to keep something from happening. In this type of situation, they have to be suspicious of everyone and immune from disguises. She shows complete disrespect for the situation these officers are in by intentionally setting up a scene where she knows they have no choice but to do as they did.

I am curious to know what exactly is she protesting.

These are not conscripts. These guys know what they signed up for, and part of their job is oppressing people.

Free speech zones = Fascism
